Week one of the playoffs provided plenty of suspense and an equally heavy dose of surprise. The matchups in round two of the postseason could provide just as much excitement.
Bartlesville Bruins (9-2) at Southmoore SaberCats (10-1)
When you look at 6A, all but one of the top seeds coasted to easy wins. The Southmoore SaberCats had to battle for their postseason lives with Eisenhower and barely escaped with a 34-32 win. Kicker Sam York booted a 30-yard game-winning, season-saving field goal to keep the SaberCats’ title hopes alive. Southmoore will host a red-hot Bartlesville team looking to keep its dream season alive. The Bruins took down Owasso on the road in round one 14-7, and will make the 2 hour 49 minute bus ride to Oklahoma City this weekend with an upset on their minds. The Bruins are very capable of taking down Southmoore. They are led by a talented offense that averages 37 points per game on the road, and has only lost once away from HS Custer Stadium.
Edmond Memorial Bulldogs (8-3) at Jenks Trojans (11-0)
Picking a favorite a wear the 6A crown depends on who you talk to. Most will say it’s either the Trojans or the Union Redskins, but OKC-ers have put some hope on Edmond Memorial. The Bulldogs stomped Mustang 38-7 in round one and could give Jenks a run for their money this weekend. Jenks has been particularly vulnerable in the first halves of games, trailing a few times at the break. If the Bulldogs can start fast, it could be a long night for the Trojans. Another storyline to focus on will be the play of Edmond Memorial’s run defense. They allow just over 63 yards per game on the ground, and Jenks running back Zach Langer averages just shy of 150 yards per game on the ground. He also leads 6A with 28 scores this season.
Broken Arrow Tigers (9-2) at Midwest City Bombers (9-2)
The Broken Arrow Tigers’ march to a state title now hits the road. Before playing a regular season game against Bartlesville, head coach Ron Lancaster expressed the importance of playing at least one game at home in the postseason, saying it was just too hard to win them all on the road. His Tigers took care of business at home in week one of the playoffs picking up a 45-13 win over Enid. They will now try and figure out how to do something no 6A-2 team could this season – beat the Bombers. Midwest City finished district play spotless, winning by an average of 40 points. The Bombers took down Putnam City North, 21-16 last Friday and has title aspirations of their own.
Lawton Wolverines (9-2) at Union Redskins (10-1)
Lawton looked impressive in a 34-16 win over Edmond North in round one. Lawton beat the Huskies thanks to a big second half. The Wolverines outscored Edmond North 20-0 after halftime and finished the night with over 270 yards rushing, led by Charles Smith and Domonique Massengill. The Wolverines will need that kind of effort on the ground again this week when they battle the Union Redskins in round two. We all know what to expect with Union. The team’s only loss was in the Backyard Bowl against Jenks and the Redskins win by more than five touchdowns when they play at Tuttle Stadium. Union struggled in the first half in round one against Claremore, but, like Lawton, had a huge second half and won easily, 27-9. Union has a distinct advantage over Lawton already. The Wolverines have to travel to Tulsa to play the game. That trek is a three hour, 175-mile one-way trip.
